Summary LLMs are better at developing crystallized intelligence than fluid intelligence. That is: LLM training is good at building crystallized intelligence by learning patterns from training data, and this is sufficient to make them surprisingly skillful at lots of tasks. But for a given capability level in the areas they’ve trained on, LLMs have very weak fluid intelligence compared to humans. For example, two years ago I thought human-level SAT performance would mean AGI, but turns out LLMs can do great at the SAT while being mediocre at lots of other tasks. I’m not saying LLMs are just parrots (that’s dumb). [1] There’s a continuity between crystallized and fluid intelligence. At the extreme “crystal” end we have shallow locally-valid heuristics. Pure pattern matching. Now-largely-debunked “stochastic parrot” hypothesis. At the extreme end of “fluid” you have a cross between an idealized consultant, a Renaissance man, and MacGuyver. A deep world model and general reasoning, able to

- From ‘it helped me stick to a routine’ to ‘I despise it’: 11 people explain how they’re using AI for fitness
While some are using AI to tailor programs better suited to their needs, others warn ‘it can be wrong, confidently so’ People have mixed feelings about AI. While many people regularly use it – 62% in the US and 69% in the UK – trust in the technology is low. In the US, only 26% of people have a positive view of AI, according to one NBC poll , and in the UK, 78% say they worry about negative outcomes from AI. So it is perhaps no surprise that readers’ responses to our callout about AI and fitness were varied. Some said they rely on AI to shape their workouts and diets while others said they refuse to use it at all because of its impact on the economy and the environment . And many were somewhere in between – they found it a useful tool, but were less than thrilled about the technology’s impact overall. Continue reading...

- Stop overthinking AI. Simplify with 3 questions only you can answer.
The simplest AI playbook we know doesn't involve a single model. It's three questions, asked by YOU to YOU. They work for any size company, any seniority level: What are the three things, in order of importance, you must do to meet or exceed expectations in your gig? What are three things you think you're supposed to be doing that make no sense, could be done better or not at all ? What are three things AI could do better than you to 10x your output? That's it. Nine answers per person. Worst case: You force clarity and alignment with your boss. Everyone walks out knowing what actually matters. Best case: You kill the dumb stuff and fill your days with truly vital work — with AI handling what shouldn't have been on a human's plate to begin with. We provide a new template for this in our book with Axios co-founder Roy Schwartz, " Simplify: Do 50% More with 50% Less ," out Sept. 15. It's called Confront-Delete-Amplify: Confront what matters.
