AI isn’t all about automating core business functions at Fortune 500 companies. Small and medium-sized businesses can also use AI to optimize, economize, and in some cases compete more effectively against much larger rivals. An Austin, Texas-based vegan cheese-maker called Rebel Cheese used it to level the playing field against a larger supplier. Specifically, the company developed a small system of AI tools to help it claw back overcharges from a major shipping carrier. The company is perhaps best known for winning a $750,000 investment from Mark Cuban, money it used to grow Rebel Cheese into what it says is now a $20 million business. Cuban recently spoke about the company’s crafty use of AI on stage at the Convergence AI event in Dallas. The Problem Rebel Cheese ships tens of thousands of orders of perishable, handcrafted vegan cheese across the country. The holiday season is by far its busiest period. “Q4 is all hands, heads down, get it out the door, make sure customers are happy,

- Predeeption: the project that aims to anticipate the aging of your batteries using artificial intelligence!
Using artificial intelligence to anticipate battery aging, that is the challenge taken on by Christophe Verdoucq, Arnaud Demortière, Josh Trivedi, and Basile Jezequel, founders of the startup project Predeeption, supported by the Inria Startup Studio at the Inria Centre of Saclay. Their ambition is to develop a fully integrated solution embedded directly into the Battery Management System (BMS), the system responsible for controlling battery operation, by incorporating their expertise in battery aging. The goal is to meet users’ needs and provide them with concrete, real-time recommendations. On this occasion, Christophe Verdoucq, co-creator of the project, agreed to answer our questions on the subject.

- The AI economy needs a new vocabulary
Technology is evolving faster than the language we use to describe it. As a result, people are often talking past each other about what software, AI and automation are. These are treated as single categories when in reality they contain several fundamentally different disciplines and economic models. And when reality changes faster than our language, confusion follows. That’s roughly where we are with technology right now. This challenge is not technical, it is semantic. When different groups use the same words to mean different things, alignment becomes difficult. A software engineer, product manager and executive may all use the word “software,” but they are often referring to entirely different categories of work. This lack of precision becomes more problematic as systems scale. Decisions about hiring, tooling and strategy depend on understanding what kind of work is being done. Without clear vocabulary, those decisions and the resulting actions are often based on incorrect assumpti
