AI, power and the trade-off between freedom and innovation

Freedom has always been America’s global advantage. But when it comes to the quest for AI dominance, it may also be our biggest weakness. In the U.S., guardrails around AI — privacy protections, legal frameworks and ethics and accountability — are in place to preserve our individual freedoms. For 250 years, open systems, legal protections and market competition created the conditions for innovation to emerge and scale. Today, we’re seeing how these protections can also slow things down. In countries like China and Russia, fewer restrictions allow broader deployment and faster time-to-market for AI innovations. In the U.S., additional layers of AI governance, oversight and legal exposure are creating friction. The recent dispute between the U.S. government and Anthropic is a case in point.
