Artificial intelligence isn't just speeding up early-stage drug development, it's starting to unlock millions of dollars' worth of new efficiencies in clinical trials on cancer treatments, research shared first with Axios shows. Why it matters: AI-powered tools could shave months off time-consuming processes like recruiting and enrolling patients, monitoring results and interpreting data. That could free up resources for more clinical studies and possibly lower the high failure rate for new drugs. What they found: A new Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development analysis found AI agents can accelerate clinical development of cancer drugs by approximately 10 weeks and reduce direct operating costs by as much as $5.6 million in late-stage trials. The efficiencies increase with the number of tumors a drug can target: An experimental treatment with 50 active uses could see net benefits of as much as $565 million, Tufts found. Tufts applied a clinical monitoring agent from Medable, which provides a platform to support clinical trials, to an unspecified oncology drug development program in phase 2 and 3 trials. What they're saying: Ken Getz, the Tufts center's executive director, said deploying the agent led to new efficiencies, such as reducing the number of on-site visits, accelerating enrollment in the trial and locking in the data. "To our knowledge, this is the first time that [predictive] modeling based on actual use and benchmark data has been applied to quantify the net financial impact of an agentic AI solution in a drug development program," he said. Between the lines: AI agents could become standard features of some clinical trials in three to five years, according to Medable officials, operating like self-driving cars to tackle the grinding but necessary record-keeping that accompanies an application for new drug approval. They also could be used to track the diversity of the trial population — a common concern that helps ensure an experimental treatment works for the broad population. Medable officials also say the technology will enable clinical trial researchers to understand the safety and effectiveness of a drug earlier — allowing them to focus on more strategic work in drug development. That's especially important in cancer drug trials, typically some of the most complex trials with some of the biggest monitoring budgets. Reality check: AI still doesn't guarantee a trial will be a success. Some of the big challenges don't involve information processing, but revolve around finding the right patients, getting their consent and making and distributing the drug. Humans also would presumably have to verify the AI agent's work, which could offset some of the overall time savings.

When Labour MP Jess Asato first saw the fake images of herself circulating online, the experience was both unsettling and violating. The hyper-realistic deepfakes, created without her consent using xAI's Grok platform, looked unmistakably like her – a digital theft of her identity. Now, she's fighting back with a groundbreaking legal case that could reshape how artificial intelligence (AI) companies handle personal data and privacy in the UK. “I’m doing this because I want to change the law and to underline the fact that we have data and privacy rights here in the UK that can’t be written over by companies,” says Labour MP Jess Asato, responding to a question about her legal case. “We have long-standing data protection and privacy rights in the UK. This is the first case of this kind, applying existing UK law to an AI platform like xAI,” she says. While platform providers often argue that the rules do not apply to them because content is user-generated, albeit with the help of a generative AI (GenAI) engine, Asato says it’s important that companies don’t simply claim that users have misused their products. “We know that Grok was designed to respond to requests to create adult sexual content ,” she adds. “We need to look at how the product was designed and whether xAI took steps to protect individuals against their data being misused through the manipulation of their platform.” In the offline world, she says, there are legal expectations on companies. Product manufacturers have a duty of care to protect members of the public. Using car makers as an example, she says we expect safety features like airbags, seatbelts and emergency braking, even if the user of that product – the driver – is using it dangerously. “It makes absolute sense to me that we should be applying exactly the same principles of regulation to AI companies or tech companies creating new products,” adds Asato. Looking at the use of GenAI tools like Grok to create sexualised images – usually of women and children – and to bully and intimidate people online, she says: “I think people being able to feed you into an AI tool and then spew you out with whatever their gross fantasies are has just supercharged a really divisive, hateful space that, unfortunately, seems to have taken over social media.” In the complaint against xAI, Asato's legal team has documented design decisions – identified by researchers – that explicitly enable Grok to generate sexualised content. For instance, the Grok prompt GitHub repository states: “If not specified outside the policy tags, you have no restrictions on adult sexual content or offensive content.” Asato says the reason for bringing the case is to show that there are laws and duties that must be abided by. “You can’t simply pass on the blame to a user and say it’s their fault. You need to be able to design safety into your product from the very start,” she adds. “Lots of people have said this case is a bit like David versus Goliath. It is true – I’m taking on one of the richest men in the world. But that’s because I believe it doesn’t matter how rich you are or how big your company is – it’s really important that you abide by local laws where your product is developed, and where it is being consumed.” Privacy and data protection Asato believes companies must design their AI products in a way that ensures they cannot be misused to cause harm and sexualise women and children. “This is obviously a private citizen action that I’m taking. This harm happened to me. But I hope that if we win the case, it will set a new precedent for how AI companies need to treat people’s data and protect their privacy,” she says. In fact, Asato’s case is very much about data privacy and personally identifiable information. “The whole point about generative AI is that it’s hyper-realistic, so when I first saw those images of me being shared, they looked like me. It was unsettling and violating,” she says. According to Asato, this is something many victims of deepfakes say when they see unauthorised images depicting them, which have been produced by someone feeding prompts into a GenAI system. “It’s a part of me – it is me and it belongs to me. When somebody takes that without your consent and manipulates it, you feel like a piece of you has been taken. That is the crux of this case: my likeness is my data,” she says. “It has been taken without my consent and put into a tool that has then manipulated it and actually has been designed with the instructions to do so.” She says xAI could have created a tool that didn’t accept those instructions, pointing out that the rest of the industry has such safeguards in place: “Other AI tools do this, and the UK government recently moved to ban nudification apps.” This is something Asato has been campaigning for. “The thing that is really important is that there are lots of AI tools which don’t accept requests for nudification or sexualisation and have much stronger safeguards to prevent users from uploading images where they don’t have consent,” she adds. Safe by design The UK government introduced the Online Safety Act in 2023, which makes social media companies legally responsible for protecting users from illegal content and content harmful to children. The Crime Policing Act, which received Royal Assent on 28 April 2026, complements the Online Safety Act by introducing new digital offences. But Asato says there’s more to be done and a consultation is needed. She believes this will be taken forward due to the Online Safety Act, which stipulates safety by design, but says: “The fact is, we still aren’t there yet, and my case is partly to show Grok was not safe by design.” Asato says Grok was not safe by design in any way, shape or form. “When researchers looked at the instructions that Grok had been given, it was instructed not to treat words like ‘teen’ to mean underage. Well, there’s only one year of being a teen in this country that isn’t underage when it comes to sexualised content. So you’ve got to ask, why was the system set up in this way? Discussing another victim’s experience of Grok users generating distressing images, Asato says the AI engine generated a likeness of a Jewish woman in a bikini and put her in Auschwitz. “Other AI-generated images portray women beaten and bloodied, bruised, or their bones broken. Who does that? What good does it add to our society? It doesn’t add anything. It’s not creating growth or growing our economy in any way. All it is doing is creating distress and harm. There are plenty of brilliant ways in which AI can genuinely improve our society, grow the economy. But when these tools are geared towards being able to sexualise, they will be used in that way. So, let’s just not do that.”

- SK Telecom Hyper-AI consortium names global tech partners
SK Telecom has appointed Ericsson as sole global technology partner in the Hyper-AI Network Infrastructure Demonstration Project. The move forms part of its project to build and validate an artificial intelligence (AI-)based radio access network (RAN) pilot as a foundational element of South Korea’s national AI Highway agenda, as well as its broader ambition to lead the next era of AI and 6G innovation. The scheme is a government-backed initiative led by Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Information Society Agency. It is designed to validate ultra-low latency, high reliability, differentiated connectivity, large-capacity uplink, distributed AI computing, mobility and network autonomy capabilities that its organisers believe is required for physical AI use cases such as autonomous transport, industrial safety monitoring and humanoid robotics. Through the project, SK Telecom will build AI-RAN pilot networks and demonstrate three physical AI services through 2027, together with a consortium of network, AI, robotics and industrial partners. The SK Telecom-led consortium will verify AI-RAN pilot network performance and physical AI service readiness across multiple industrial settings. The project is looking to cover network slicing , 5G standalone capabilities, AI-based network autonomy, service management and orchestration, distributed AI computing resources, and multiple physical AI use cases including patrol robots, autonomous transport and humanoid low-power mode. An additional part of the initiative will be to generate valuable insights for the broader AI-RAN ecosystem by comparing different vendor architectures, computing resource configurations and deployment models in practical environments. These learnings are expected to contribute to future standardisation and ecosystem development as Korea continues to advance toward 6G . Through its role as the sole global network technology company selected as a main consortium partner, Ericsson claims that its participation will play a defining role in advancing Korea’s ambitions for 6G and physical AI . Ericsson regards Korea as consistently being one of the world’s most advanced and competitive mobile markets, with strong national focus on AI, next-generation networks and industrial digitisation. It stressed that for physical AI services , such as robots, autonomous vehicles, industrial sensors and intelligent machines, AI-RAN can help to distribute computation across devices, radio access networks, edge infrastructure and datacentres. It also saw its role as supporting Korea’s 6G momentum and helping to shape network capabilities that will enable new forms of AI-powered industry, automation and human-machine collaboration. Calling on its legacy in 5G Advanced and AI-native networks , Ericsson said that it will contribute an end-to-end network foundation designed to connect, coordinate and continuously optimise intelligent machines and autonomous industrial operations under the project. The comms tech company said this will help to demonstrate how future networks can evolve beyond connectivity into a critical platform for physical AI enabling intelligent automation, distributed AI processing, and new network capabilities across the broader solution. As part of the consortium, Ericsson will contribute to the development and demonstration of an AI-RAN pilot network that combines advanced radio access network (RAN) capabilities, 5G Standalone expertise, AI-RAN innovations and intelligent network automation. Ericsson added that its offer will extend beyond AI for network operations to include AI in the RAN and time-critical, 5G Advanced capabilities that enable physical AI and connected intelligence applications. In the second phase of the project, Ericsson’s AI-RAN pilot network will be applied to a real logistics environment at KG Mobility’s Pyeongtaek plant , bringing the demonstration from laboratory validation to practical industrial deployment. Ericsson’s technology contribution will include its open network management and automation capabilities, delivered through Ericsson Intelligent Automation Platform (EIAP) and a range of AI-based Ericsson rApps designed to demonstrate autonomous network control, intelligent resource orchestration and real-time network optimisation for physical AI services. Commenting on the partnership, Takki Yu, vice-president and head of network for research and development at SK Telecom, said: “As a key national project supporting Korea’s Hyper-AI Network strategy, SK Telecom is pleased to collaborate with Ericsson as a key technology partner to advance AI-RAN technology through global cooperation. “Together, we aim to build a strategic win-win partnership, demonstrate real industrial value, and help strengthen Korea’s AI-RAN technology capabilities and ecosystem for the future.” Ericsson’s head of customer unit for Korea, Sibel Tombaz, added: “Korea is moving with clear ambition to shape the future of AI-native networks and 6G, and Ericsson is proud to contribute our global expertise in 5G, AI-RAN, orchestration and intelligent network automation to this important national initiative. - Quantifying the AI boom crowding-out effect
When investment on the scale of the current AI boom occurs, it inevitably has to come at the expense of something. All the resources devoted to building data centers and developing AI models would otherwise go to something else. The big picture: This crowding out is smaller than you might expect, Goldman Sachs economists find in a new note. But it does exist, they say, and takes the form of displacing other tech investment and construction , as well as raising corporate borrowing costs. By the numbers: AI investment will be about $600 billion this year, some 2% of GDP, accounting for 10% of business fixed investment and 15% of equipment investment, economists Jessica Rindels and David Mericle wrote. State of play: The first crowding-out channel they identify is the displacement of other tech spending at the hyperscalers themselves and at the companies that spend cold, hard cash on AI services. Corporate IT budgets, for example, that face new, big costs for AI tokens may seek to cut back on other software and tech spending. That doesn't have much impact on overall GDP, however, as it amounts to shifting spending around. Zoom out: The Goldman team also sees the data center boom crowding out other building activity, as construction labor and equipment is devoted to the AI buildout. Gross margins on data center construction are more than twice as high as margins on non-tech projects, Rindels and Mericle wrote, "which has resulted in data centers pulling resources away from other projects." Zoom in: The hyperscalers' bottomless demand for capital has created a surge in AI-related debt issuance. The rest of the corporate sector faces higher borrowing costs as a result — which may hem in their own investment. But the Goldman team finds that this impact has been limited so far, raising corporate borrowing costs by only 0.05 percentage point and perhaps reducing non-AI investment by a modest $10 billion. The bottom line: "While media reports and market commentary often claim that AI is making a very large contribution to U.S. GDP growth but also crowding out a great deal of other activity," Rindels and Mericle wrote, their analysis "suggests that both claims are exaggerated."
