When I moved into a house in upstate New York after years of living in apartments, I decided to get an old-fashioned reel mower—the kind you push yourself, with no engine to help—for the lawn. The exercise seemed like a good idea at the time. But after spending hours each week covering my half-acre lot, I decided to test the other extreme: a robot mower guided by GPS. Husqvarna, the Sweden-based company that pioneered robo-mowers three decades ago , let me try out one of its latest versions, the Automower 410iq . Like other robotic mowers, it’s electric, avoiding the noise and pollution from a traditional 2-stroke mower. (Using a typical gasoline mower for an hour emits as much smog-forming pollution as driving a gas car for around 300 miles.) It also uses far less energy than electric push mowers. [Photo: Husqvarna] The user experience isn’t perfect yet—and at the moment, setting up the system is particularly challenging. But the tech is quickly changing as AI does, and it foreshadows where our domestic life is headed. A tricky setup The box arrived just before I was about to go out of town, and I naively thought that the Automower—which retails for $2,599 —could take care of the lawn while I was gone. But this isn’t like a plug-and-play robot vacuum that you let automatically map your house. Outside, without walls to keep the mower corralled and guarantee that it won’t veer into the road or somewhere else it shouldn’t be, you have to manually map where it should go, and the full installation process takes time. (That may soon change—more on that later.) Robotic mowers used to require installing tedious boundary wires, but many now rely on GPS. That meant I had to find a place for a small antenna with a clear view of the sky. In my tree-filled yard, that proved harder than expected. I tried the garage, ordered the wrong mount, ordered another that didn’t work with my stucco wall, and kept using the reel mower through the back-and-forth. Eventually, I gave up and mounted the antenna on a small shed. The sky was partly blocked, but the signal came on anyway. [Photo: Husqvarna] The next challenge was mapping the yard. To set that up, I used the mower’s app to drive it like a remote controlled car, dropping virtual waypoints as I went around the edge. Another mode let me map stay-out zones, though that didn’t always work: I drew a circle around a patch of wildflowers and then later watched as the mower started to plow through them anyway. The whole process was a little buggy, as the satellite connection dropped in some places as I was working. At one point, the battery ran out before the mower could drive itself back to the charging station. In one section of the yard, when the mower asked me to create a “transport path” back to the charger, it repeatedly rejected every path I tried to draw. [Photo: Husqvarna] All of this could be much easier in coming models. The company told me that it’s beginning to roll out a cloud solution for GPS, so customers can subscribe to a network of reference stations instead of having to install their own antenna. New mower models are adding vision systems to supplement the GPS navigation, to avoid getting stuck under trees or between buildings as the signal drops. And with powerful cameras, mowers could eventually map yards by themselves, automating most of the installation process. Right now, buyers also have the option of paying a dealer to install the system. And some yards may be much easier to map than mine, which has multiple sections and obstacles. Watching the mower work With the yard mapped, I chose one section of the lawn in the app and pushed a button to start mowing. The mower took a few seconds to plan its route, and then very slowly began rolling across the grass. It doesn’t work like a traditional mower—it’s designed to maintain grass that’s already at a particular height, slicing off a tip that’s so tiny that it’s almost hard to see. Instead of mowing once a week, it mows more often. By cutting such a small amount at a time, it uses very little energy; it also avoids the energy and noise of air blowing long grass clippings out of the way. (Trimming less grass at a time is also healthier for the grass.) When the app asked me to name the mower, I called it Nibbles. [Photo: Husqvarna] The slow speed of the mower also saves energy. The machine uses tens of watts of power, versus typical lawnmowers that use hundreds or thousands of watts. “We can get away with a machine that doesn’t need this big heavy blade; it doesn’t need a massive battery, it doesn’t need to consume a huge amount of energy to charge,” says Chris Price, senior engineering manager for robotics at Husqvarna’s U.S. office. On the first runs, I supervised the mower, rescuing it when the satellite signal dropped or when it got stuck on a small slope. The map of the yard can be tweaked, adjusting points as needed. In areas that struggle with GPS, until new models with more cameras are available, it’s possible to add boundary wires, though I didn’t have any to try. Once it was working—for the most part, at least—I liked it. It was incredibly quiet; I sat in the yard and heard almost nothing other than the birds. It left the grass looking perfect. The app allows the option of a few different patterns, from stripes to a checkerboard to a random pattern that creates an even carpet. After experimenting, I chose the stripes. [Photo: Husqvarna] I worried about leaving it outside, since my yard isn’t fenced, and even with theft prevention features on the mower, it seems like it could be a target, especially if it’s mowing all week long and very noticeably there. I’m not sure I would feel comfortable letting it run while traveling. The instructions recommend unplugging the outdoor charging station during thunderstorms, something that wouldn’t work from out of town. Still, it’s an illustration of the promise of home robotics, even if it’s not perfect yet. Instead of hours of hard labor, I watched the mower work out of the corner of my eye while working on my laptop on the deck and occasionally watching birds or deer go by. If one of the complaints about modern AI is that it doesn’t really mean that you work less—or that if you save some time, you’re likely to just waste it on something like TikTok —this was the opposite. I was spending more time outside and enjoying it. At some point, I’d like to get rid of my lawn and let the native maple forest take over. But for now, the robot is helpful. There are other robot lawn mowers, including multiple other models from Husqvarna, like the Husqvarna Automower 450XH , which Wirecutter notes also isn’t quite perfect. Ambrogio , Toro , Worx , Mammotion , and Navimow all make sleek robot mowers. All still have some limitations. The cost is steep but arguably worth it if you have the patience to tinker as needed to set it up. If you’re willing to wait, future models could also be worth it, as the technology improves along with AI.

You can have full back-and-forth conversations with Siri, and include multiple tasks in a single request. Personal Context Understanding Apple overhauled its search index, and Siri has access to emails, text messages, files, photos, notes, and more. Siri can find content from across your apps, but it also understands that content. You can ask Siri to surface photos, bring up information from emails or texts, or find files, and the Apple Intelligence semantic index behind the scenes finds what you need. Siri can give you feedback on your writing if you select your text and ask Siri how it sounds, and as you type in apps, there's automatic proofreading for misspellings and grammar. Siri can also edit, and you just need to describe the change that you want to make to something you've written, such as changing the tone to be more professional. Apple used the technologies behind the Gemini AI models to develop the next generation of Apple Foundation models. Apple's AI models are integrated into iOS and coordinated with a system orchestrator that can use the Spotlight index and the app toolbox. The Spotlight index surfaces data from any app that integrates with it, such as Mail, Calendar, and Messages. The app toolbox identifies which app tools might be useful to answer a request. Siri Voice Apple has a more powerful on-device model for the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone Air , allowing for a customizable Siri voice. Apple says its on-device model can understand and generate speech, plus understand text and images. You can tweak expressivity and pace when customizing Siri's voice. The on-device model also improves accuracy for system-wide dictation thanks to better natural language understanding. Dictation is better at capturing what you're saying, and it makes fewer mistakes with spelling, punctuation, and capitalization. Privacy Apple's Siri features run on-device and on cloud servers using Private Cloud Compute. Data is not accessible to Apple or third parties. Private Cloud Compute servers have historically all been Apple servers in Apple data centers, but Apple is expanding Private Cloud Compute to run Apple Intelligence workloads on Google Cloud using NVIDIA hardware. Cross-Platform Availability Siri AI is available in iOS 27, iPadOS 27 , macOS Golden Gate , visionOS 27, and watchOS 27 , so you can start a Siri request on one device and revisit it on another device. Siri conversations sync across devices, and the Siri app is available on most of Apple's software platforms. Siri AI features are also available when using CarPlay and AirPods. Device Requirements Siri AI requires a device that supports Apple Intelligence, including the iPhone 15 Pro and later. Siri AI will not be available in the European Union at launch on iPhone or iPad , but it will be available on the Mac. It will not be available in China. Language Support Siri AI works in English (Australia, Canada, Ireland, India, New Zealand, South Africa, UK, U.S.), and will expand to more languages in the future. When Salesforce announced on Monday its plan to buy agentic AI firm Fin, which, until a few weeks ago, was known as Intercom, it said that the company “resolves complex customer queries end-to-end, across every channel, including live chat, email, WhatsApp, SMS, phone, and Slack.” But analysts and consultants questioned whether the acquisition, one of more than a dozen Salesforce AI acquisitions since the beginning of last year, was going to end up accelerating the Salesforce functionality timeline or merely confuse matters. Scott Bickley , advisory fellow at Info-Tech Research, found the acquisition baffling. “I can’t figure out their focus. They are all over the place,” Bickley said. Bickley said making so many AI acquisitions in such a short timeframe means that there will be a lot of decisions about what stays and what doesn’t. “They are going to be integrating dozens of code bases in short order. When I zoom out, it is a little bit troubling.” “What they are trying to accomplish is not a bad goal: filling out their agent narrative. But they are trying to do it all at once. That means marketing will precede functionality,” Bickley said. For enterprise CIOs, he noted, “trying to map out the future will force a lot of questions. That tells me that they are trying to build the airplane while still in the air.” He noted that Salesforce would benefit from diversifying its installed base, because “its growth trajectory with enterprise is starting to wane”, and this acquisition would potentially help it increase its SMB market share. Fin claims 30,000 customers, which likely means most of them are SMBs. But that means Salesforce will have to make other changes, he said. “They will have to adjust. They cannot charge enterprise pricing with that model.” The news release about the announcement said that the acquisition “is expected to close in the fourth quarter of Salesforce’s fiscal year 2027” which spans the calendar dates from Nov. 1, 2026, through Jan. 31, 2027. The company declined a request for an interview about the deal. Fin had been known as Intercom for almost its corporate life, but it changed its name to Fin on May 12, just a few weeks before the acquisition announcement. Given that negotiations were almost certainly resolved by mid-May, as lawyers and marketers from both companies fine-tuned language for SEC filings and the news release, it seemed unusual to announce a corporate name change in mid-May, rather than wait for the acquisition to close and to then let the new owners decide. Justin Greis , CEO of consulting firm Acceligence, found the name change “fascinating,” but said his instinct is that the rebrand was driven by long-term positioning rather than short-term transaction considerations. “Founders and leadership teams typically spend months shaping the identity they believe best represents the future of the company,” he pointed out. “If they had already concluded that the market opportunity centered on Fin as a category-defining AI platform, changing course simply because acquisition discussions were underway may have felt shortsighted.” Needs a clear vision “For CIOs, implementation complexity has become one of the biggest barriers to AI adoption. The challenge is rarely access to models. It’s connecting data, workflows, governance, security, and business processes to deliver tangible results,” Greis said. “Enterprise AI is moving from a technology conversation to an execution conversation, and time-to-value is becoming the new battleground for competitive advantage. I think Salesforce is making a strategic bet that enterprises want multiple paths to adoption.” Greis added that enterprise CIOs already assume that product lines, especially those including generative AI and agentic AI, will constantly change. “What matters far more is whether Salesforce provides a clear vision for where customers should place their bets over the next three to five years and incentivize adoption, stickiness, and value to their customers,” he said. “Enterprise buyers can manage product change, but unclear roadmaps create much bigger problems than portfolio consolidation. No CIO would build their foundation on a platform that has a high risk of sunsetting in the next few years.” But, he added, enterprise CIOs today have little choice but to accept a lot of uncertainty from all of the major vendors. Others argued that CIOs still need some firm targets so that they can make concrete decisions for their enterprises. “The execution risk is acquisition indigestion, the same affliction that turns platform breadth into licensing fog,” said Sanchit Vir Gogia , chief analyst at Greyhound Research. “The most important date in this announcement is the one that does not exist: Salesforce has given a transaction close window but it has not given an integration timetable. Acquisitions run on three clocks. Ownership transfers fastest. Commercial alignment follows. Architectural integration, where identity, data and governance actually converge, runs slowest and decides the outcome. The credible path to meaningful convergence is 12 to 24 months beyond close, not a quarter beyond announcement.” Salesforce’s own history illustrates this, he said. A straightforward acquisition has closed inside two months, a complex one took the better part of a year, “and value realization trailed both,” Gogia said. A better way to pay for AI However, one of the potential benefits that Fin would bring to Salesforce is Fin’s differentiated pricing strategy. One of the aspects of AI that delivers the most problems for CIOs is the lack of any direct ROI . Fin has been trying to address that by charging only when a customer experiences an apparent good outcome. Nik Kale , a member of the Coalition for Secure AI (CoSAI) and of ACM’s AI Security (AISec) program committee, pointed out, “what Salesforce paid $3.6 billion for is an outcome-pricing model and a book of proof that the model works. Fin charges about 99 cents per resolved conversation and the customer pays nothing when the agent fails. That pricing structure is the actual asset because it sidesteps the exact thing that’s been gating agentic adoption, which is that enterprises don’t want to pay for agents they haven’t learned to trust yet.” But, Kale said, there is a catch. “For CIOs, the per-outcome model quietly moves the risk of a bad agent decision from the buyer back to the vendor, at least on paper. That sounds great until you ask who writes the definition of ‘resolved.’ In outcome pricing, a customer who gives up and walks away looks identical to a customer who actually got helped because both of them stop replying,” he said. “Silence gets billed as success. So outcome pricing looks like the vendor taking on your risk, but when the vendor also owns the definition of a win, you’ve handed them the scoreboard and the referee. The definition of ‘outcome’ is where the governance lives and, right now, it lives in the vendor’s measurement, not yours.” “Salesforce didn’t buy a better agent. They bought a better way to get paid for one,” he said.
