Thanks to @Jeremy Gillen for reading and commenting on the draft. This was written while I was was funded by the Advanced Research + Invention Agency (ARIA) through project code MSAI-SE01-P005. I have tried to achieve two goals in this post. The first is to provide a self-contained explanation of Natural Latents using lots of pictures of probability distributions. The second is to frame Natural Latents in terms of statements about mutual information, rather than the KL-divergences and Bayes nets that Wentworth and Lorell normally use [1] . The two approaches are mathematically equivalent, but the different framings can bring slightly different way of thinking about the problem. This post will focus on what it means for a variable to satisfy the natural latent conditions and what those conditions correspond to intuitively. I'll also discuss a little bit about the motivation for studying natural latents. I'm not going to go through proofs or derivations, but hopefully by the end of this

No cloud. No API keys. No excuses. The full on-device pipeline — from writing a note to getting an answer. Nothing in this flow touches a network after the initial model download. It started with a paranoid thought. I was taking meeting notes on my phone — project decisions, research fragments, half-formed ideas — and I wanted to ask a question across all of them. What did I decide about the API design last month? What did that article say about PostgreSQL indexing? The obvious answer was to pipe everything into one of the big AI APIs. But then I thought: every note I’ve ever written would be traveling to someone else’s server. My research. My half-baked ideas. My meeting minutes. I didn’t like that. So I did what any reasonable developer does when they don’t like the obvious answer: I spent considerably more time building the unreasonable one. The Constraint That Changed Everything I gave myself one rule: after the initial model download, the app works with the network radio completel
- Foundation Models Do Not Understand Biology
Imagine an AI medical tool that can write a beautiful diagnostic report in seconds, which is clean, confident, perfectly structured, and then say something completely impossible, like a blood parasite living inside a tissue sample where it simply could not exist. That’s the strange thing about modern multimodal LLMs. On one hand, they can do genuinely impressive work: pull together clinical details, write clear summaries, spot patterns, and help overstretched healthcare workers move faster. In places where training or specialist support is limited, that kind of help could matter a lot. But there’s a catch. A serious one. Image Generated using Gemini These models don’t actually understand biology. They don’t reason from anatomy, physics, or disease mechanisms. They generate answers by predicting which words are most likely to come next. So when a model talks about a cell, it doesn’t know what a cell is in any real-world sense. It only knows how the word usually appears in medical writin
