- Rise of AI raises fears of North Korean hacking capabilities
A man holds a laptop computer as cyber code is projected onto him in this illustration from May 13, 2017. [REUTERS/YONHAP] Concerns are mounting that North Korean hackers are weaponizing AI's ability to autonomously identify security vulnerabilities to launch more sophisticated cyberattacks against South Korean government systems. Kaspersky, a Moscow-based cybersecurity company, said Wednesday that it had uncovered signs that the North Korean hacking group Kimsuky "used a large language model [LLM] in their attempts to create new malware." The company’s researchers found "emoji-filled comments and grammatical mistakes embedded in the code of a malware strain known as HelloDoor," noting that these are cues suggesting that an LLM had assisted in the code-writing. Two world powers are in an arms race to develop the most advanced AI systems, and neither of them trusts each other—but each relies on the other’s compliance to proceed. This contradiction lies at the core of a dangerous standoff for our time. President Trump’s meetings with President Xi Jinping in Beijing this week are a crucial moment for the U.S.-China relationship.
