- I knew my writing students were using AI. Their confessions led to a powerful teaching moment | Micah Nathan
The problem wasn’t just the perfectly polished, yet mediocre prose. It’s what’s lost when we surrender the struggle to translate thought into words I have been teaching fiction writing at MIT since 2017. Many of my students last wrote fiction in middle school, and very few have experienced a proper workshop, so at the start of every semester I offer these directions for writer and reader alike: Read the story at least twice. Mark what works and what doesn’t – underline great sentences, flag clunky syntax, gaps in logic and unrealistic dialogue. Ask yourself: does the story work? Why or why not? What could improve it? Answer in a signed letter to the author, attached to their story. Give your honest opinions. Remember that an effective peer review demands close reading of the text accompanied by a boldness of spirit. Continue reading...

- AI app to detect drunk drivers through Cantonese speech analysis in the works
Hong Kong researchers say they are developing what would be the world’s first AI app that detects intoxication through real-time Cantonese voice analysis, helping users decide whether they are fit to drive after drinking. A team from the Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) said on Sunday that the self-assessment tool could not only help safeguard road safety but also potentially monitor language abnormalities linked to medication or fatigue. Funded by a HK$3.4 million (US$434,251) grant...

A scene from the now-deleted AI-generated ad for Pelicana fried chicken [SCREEN CAPTURE] Local fried chicken brand Pelicana pulled an AI-generated advertisement after it drew online criticism for treating infidelity as a comedic premise. The ad featured anthropomorphized fried chicken characters: A couple welcomes a baby that appears to be a piece of seasoned chicken, leading the husband to suspect the wife of infidelity. A female pelican doctor character, based on the brand's mascot, also appears, showing interest in the husband and attempting to seduce him. Dr Simon Nieder responds to Richard Dawkins’ encounters with a chatbot Richard Dawkins’ reflections on AI consciousness are striking – not because they show that machines have crossed some hidden threshold into inner life, but because they reveal how readily we can be persuaded that they have ( Richard Dawkins concludes AI is conscious, even if it doesn’t know it, 5 May ). Many will recognise the experience: a system that responds with fluency, humour and apparent understanding. At some point, simulation starts to feel like presence. But that shift tells us more about human cognition than machine consciousness. The error is a category one. These systems generate highly convincing representations of thought and feeling, but they provide no evidence of subjective experience. To move from one to the other is to mistake output for ontology – to infer an inner life where there is no credible mechanism for one. Continue reading...

- Clarifying the role of the behavioral selection model
This is a brief elaboration on The behavioral selection model for predicting AI motivations , based on some feedback and thoughts I’ve had since publishing. Written quickly in a personal capacity. The main focus of this post is clarifying the basic machinery of the behavioral selection model, and conveying why it matters to disambiguate between different “motivations” for AI behavior . Very similar or identical behavior in training can correspond to radically different outcomes in deployment based on what motivated it. I’ll preface by saying: I think the behavioral selection model is quite predictive and useful to understand, especially in the short-medium term. But it leaves out some really important dynamics for predicting AI motivations, and I wish I had clarified this more in the original post. Most importantly (as Habryka mentioned ), it leaves out the effect of reflection and deliberation on AI motivations (which I discuss a small amount in other pieces , and briefly at the end o

- Neural Networks learn Bloom Filters
Overview: We train a tiny ReLU network to output sparse top- distributions over a vocabulary much larger than its residual dimension. The trained network seems to converge to a mechanism closely resembling a Bloom filter: tokens are assigned sparse binary hashes, the hidden layer computes an approximate union indicator, and the output logits are linearly read from this union. Here's what a small network trained on a toy version of the sparse top- distribution task learns to use: Weight matrix of a 1-layer ReLU network trained via gradient descent on the toy -sparse distribution task below, for , , . Truncated at first tokens for visualisation purposes. Plot of the range of values of , it forms a bimodal distribution. That's the input weight matrix of the trained network. Every entry is either or . The network has effectively encoded a binary hash for each token - and as we'll show, this seems to enable the network to approximately simulate a Bloom filter, and so output the correct set
