- AI FOMO: When AI Is the wrong answer to the right problem
Most AI project failures I have seen do not announce themselves cleanly. There is rarely a moment where someone stands up and admits to making the wrong call. Instead, the project quietly underdelivers. The team makes constant adjustments; leadership loses confidence and eventually the whole thing is filed away under “we tried AI and it did not work out.” This happens without anyone doing a real accounting of what the decision actually cost. I was close to one of those situations not long ago. An organization had a system built around county-level values that drove a core business process. Over time, those values had drifted and the outputs were degrading in ways that affected the bottom line. The path forward was not complicated: A targeted update to the underlying values and some lightweight tooling to detect drift going forward. It would have been a few weeks of focused work at a modest cost with high confidence in the outcome. What happened instead was that the organization decided

- I gave our developers an AI coding assistant. The security team nearly mutinied
I’ve sat in enough risk meetings to know the sound a bad surprise makes before anyone names it. It usually starts with a pause. Then a throat gets cleared. Then someone says, “We may need to bring the CISO into this.” That happened over a developer tool. Not a breach. Not a regulator. Not ransomware at 2:00 a.m. A coding assistant. At first, I thought the reaction was overcooked. I’d seen the same pattern in other boardrooms and delivery teams. A new tool appears. Engineers like it because it saves time. Leadership likes it because it promises more output without hiring half a city. Security hates it because security has the social burden of being the adult in the room when everyone else is buying fireworks. I backed the rollout because the case was clean on paper. Developers were drowning in repetitive work. Deadlines were tightening. Technical debt had started breeding in the dark. The assistant could draft tests, explain old code, suggest refactors and help junior engineers stop tre

- The AI assessment gap: Why your hiring process can’t find the talent you need
The next time someone on your team says, ‘hire an AI engineer,’ stop the conversation . That title is too vague because it fails to account for critical differences in engineering strengths. Instead, companies need to decide specifically what they need. Is it someone to rapidly prototype AI solutions? Or someone to build the solution that makes it ready for production? Or someone to design the supporting capabilities and infrastructure to scale it? These are all different skills and require different assessments during the hiring process. But here’s where companies also fall short. Assessing skills is hard and assessments, as we know them, are broken when it comes to AI. They’re misaligned with what AI roles actually demand. That misalignment is what I call the AI assessment gap. Where the gap lives Most technical assessments were built for a pre-AI world: Coding proficiency, algorithms, deterministic system design. These are skills tests. They confirm that an engineer can do the work.

Scale AI CEO Jason Droege tells Axios that AI is often too unreliable for mission-critical use by business, military and government. "The cost of mistakes in these environments can be high," Droege, 47, said in an interview from San Francisco, where Scale — which celebrated its 10th anniversary this week — is based. Why it matters: Droege — who succeeded founder Alexandr Wang last June when the wunderkind became Meta's first chief AI officer, and Meta took a 49% stake in Scale — wants to signal that it isn't merely a data annotation company, but has long been an AI infrastructure and deployment company. Droege unveiled his mantra for his 1,300+ employees in a memo, "The Reliability Race," being reported here for the first time. "Reliability at this level depends on human intelligence," he wrote. "Our forward-deployed engineers ensure reliability for customers' specific workflows and use cases." Between the lines: Droege told Axios that he synthesized the message while talking with cust
