- PORTool: Importance-Aware Policy Optimization with Rewarded Tree for Multi-Tool-Integrated Reasoning
Multi-tool-integrated reasoning enables LLM-empowered tool-use agents to solve complex tasks by interleaving natural-language reasoning with calls to external tools. However, training such agents using outcome-only rewards suffers from credit-assignment ambiguity, obscuring which intermediate steps (or tool-use decisions) lead to success or failure. In this paper, we propose PORTool, an importance-aware policy-optimization algorithm that reinforces agents’ tool-use competence from outcome-level supervision while assigning reward at the step level. Specifically, PORTool generates a rewarded…
- Identifying Real-World Winter Scenarios Where Drift-Capable Control Could Improve Road Safety
By: Elliot Weiss, Srijan Srivatsa, Hiroshi Yasuda, and Tiffany L. Chen At Toyota Research Institute (TRI), the Human Interactive Driving (HID) team has produced cutting-edge research on vehicle control at and beyond the limits of handling. Notably, our collaboration with Stanford University’s Dynamic Design Lab resulted in the world’s first autonomous tandem drift . Since then, HID researchers have continued to explore different aspects of vehicle dynamics and control for autonomous drifting, including learned models that are updated online for drifting with unknown tires [1], reference-free formula drift maneuvers [2], and drifting controllers using Koopman-based dynamics models [3]. To confer the safety benefits of expert-level autonomous drifting controllers like these to everyday drivers and passengers, we need to transition these systems from Formula Drift-style maneuvers on the track to collision avoidance maneuvers in realistic traffic environments. But what are the most common
- New understanding of insect flight points way to stable flapping-wing robots
The way bugs and birds flap their wings may look effortless, but the dynamics that keep them aloft are dizzyingly complex and difficult to quantify. Cornell researchers have created a computational model that shows the effect of insects' morphology on stabilizing their flight. The findings could lead to a new way to understand the evolution of animal flight while also providing a blueprint for designing flapping-wing robots.
