- Maybe I was too harsh on deep learning theory (three days ago)
A few days ago, I reviewed a paper titled “There Will Be a Scientific Theory of Deep Learning" . In it, I expressed appreciation for the authors for writing the piece, but skepticism for stronger forms of their titular claims. Since then I’ve spoken with various past collaborators (via text and in person), and read or reread quite a few deep learning theory papers, including the bombshell Zhang et al. 2016 and Nagarajan et al. 2019 papers that I wrote about on LessWrong. And the thing is, parts of the infinite width/depth-limit work turned out to be much more interesting than I thought it was. Perhaps I have judged deep learning theory (a bit) too harshly . (Thanks to Dmitry Vaintrob and Kareel Hänni in particular for conversations on this topic. Much of this was in private, but was spurred on by a comment from Dmitry that can be found on LessWrong . Also thanks again to the authors of the scientific theory of deep learning paper, which provided a bunch of references to papers that I h

- Musk casts himself as AI's good guy in testimony vs. OpenAI
Elon Musk portrayed himself in court this week as a leading advocate for AI safety — in contrast to what he described as the profit-consumed OpenAI that he's suing. Why it matters: Musk's self-portrait as a guardian of AI safety clashed with OpenAI's counterargument: that Musk was fine with a for-profit OpenAI when he thought he could control it. How the debate over Musk's motivations is resolved could be key to the outcome of the lawsuit the richest man in the world is waging against OpenAI. The big picture: Musk was the first witness in his lawsuit against Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, OpenAI and Microsoft. Under questioning from his own lawyer, Steven Molo, Musk argued that the only way to keep AI from "killing us all" was to keep it out of the hands of anyone trying to make money on it. He later acknowledged that his own AI company, xAI, is a for-profit. Musk was able to avoid elaborating since SpaceX recently acquired xAI and the rocket company is in an SEC quiet period ahead of a pl
